Artificial Insemination (AI) is a simple assisted reproduction technique.
It consists in processing a sample of seminal fluid to select the best quality spermatozoon from the sample and introduce them into the woman’s uterus through an insemination cannula.
This procedure reduces the distance the spermatozoon have to travel before encountering the ovule and save any possible anatomical or immunological obstacles in the environment of the vagina or along the cervix.
An AI can be performed during a natural ovulatory cycle, but aiming to cause the growth of several ovules instead of one and thus increase the probability of pregnancy, it is usually done after a gentle hormonal stimulation of the ovary.
The AI is indicated when the permeability of the fallopian tubes is preserved and provided that the semen is of sufficient quality.
The insemination can be performed with semen from the male partner or with donated semen in case he has got severe semen alterations or in case of single women.
